Early Childhood Education

The Ministry believes Early Childhood Education is an important gateway to higher achievement for Pacific peoples.

Early Childhood Education Workshops for families

The Ministry’s Auckland workshops to get more children into early learning have started for the year and have expanded to more areas.

For a second year we are collaborating with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) to host workshops for Pacific families who are MSD clients.

These workshops resulted in referring 103 children for enrolment into early childhood education (ECE) in the 2014/2015 financial year.

The workshops have been expanded from 7 to 10 Auckland areas this year.

We’re looking forward to enrolling many more children at workshops over the coming months.

If you want to find out how to be referred for ECE please contact Auckland Regional Advisor, Kalolo Fihaki.

Breaking down Barriers to ECE

Pacific families have told us that health barriers were a reason some were not enrolling children into an ECE services.

In 2016 the Ministry is working to reduce those reasons by partnering with the Ministry of Health and Manukau Districu Health Board ( MDHB) to ensure health messages and support are readily available and understood by Pacific families.

The ECE workshops with MSD have now grown to include MDHB Pacific clients and not just MSD.

The Numbers

In March 2015, 91 percent of Pacific children had participated in ECE compared with 86.2 percent in March 2012. This compares with 98 percent for Pakeha /European and 93.8 percent for Māori.
