Pacific Employment Support Service (PESS)
Following this successful pilot, PESS has been allocated a total of $4.6m for a further four years.
Funded by the Ministry, we are committed to reducing the number of Pacific young people aged 15-29 who are Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET).
Increasing Pacific income and wealth, and building Pacific leadership are priority focus areas for the Ministry.
In March 2017, 11,600 Pacific young people aged 15-24 were Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). Of these, 5,979 young Pacific people are in Auckland.
What is the Ministry doing?
The successful PESS programme from 2010 to 2017 achieved:
- 1906 Pacific young people participate in the programme.
- 1431 successful placed into employment or training (75%).
- 72% sustained 6 month or more continuous employment.
What is PESS?
PESS will help young Pacific people in Auckland and Hamilton find sustainable employment, education or training opportunities by working with four providers. These are InWork, SENZ, Skills Update and Training Institute and Solomon Group. These providers will motivate, train and match young people to jobs or education that best fit them. Examples of services they offer include tailoring interventions such as career advice, coaching or interview skills.
