Pacific Employment Support Service (PESS)
Increasing Pacific income and wealth, and building Pacific leadership are priority focus areas for the Ministry.
In March 2017, 11,500 Pacific young people aged 15-24 were Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). Of these, 5,979 young Pacific people are in Auckland.
What has the Ministry done?
The successful PESS pilot from 2010 to 2015 saw:
- 1424 Pacific young people participate in the programme.
- 1160 successful placed into employment or training (82%).
- 72% sustained 6 month or more continuous employment.
What is the Ministry doing?
Following this successful pilot, PESS has been allocated a total of $4.6m for a further four years.
Funded by the ministry, we are committed to reducing the number of Pacific young people aged 15-29 who are Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET).
What is PESS?
PESS will help young Pacific people in Auckland and Hamilton find sustainable employment, education or training opportunities by working with four providers. These are InWork, SENZ, Skills Update and Training Institute and Solomon Group. These providers will motivate, train and match young people to jobs or education that best fit them. Examples of services they offer include tailoring interventions such as career advice, coaching or interview skills.
