A 22-year-old Samoan has been recognised for the Deloitte IPANZ public sector excellence awards.

Josiah Tualamali’i was nominated by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples  as one of IPANZ Young Professionals of the Year for 2017.

Passionate about democracy and ensuring young voices have a say, Josiah has been an incredible ambassador for his Canterbury community and the Ministry..

A magnetic personality he’s articulate, confident, self-assured, optimistic, enthusiastic and truly an inspirational force within the Pacific community.

“Josiah has been an exemplary example of what it takes to be a great leader within his community,” says Ministry for Pacific Peoples Chief Executive, Laulu Mac Leauanae.

“Josiah has a strong Pacific voice. We hope his nomination has inspired many other Pacific young people to continue to strive for the best in their areas of expertise for New Zealand's future.”

“We were pleased to be at the Awards to witness Josiah’s nomination and to celebrate more Pacific success,” says Laulu.

Earlier this year, Josiah played the role of Prime Minister in the Pacific Youth Leadership and Transformation’s (PYLAT) Parliament simulation where he felt he had the potential to lead.

In 2010, aged 14, he was the youngest member to join PYLAT and now serves as the Chair since being unanimously voted in by the board of directors in 2013 at just aged 18.

To date, Josiah continues to play an active role by coaching and mentoring young people.

He has taken up leadership roles in various areas by serving as a trusted advisor or providing counsel to various boards but still finds time to volunteer and promote non-profit causes.

Josiah’s leadership contribution was recognised last year at the Ministry’s Prime Minister’s Pacific Youth Awards for which he was awarded the Air New Zealand Leadership and Inspiration Award.

Josiah’s leading influence is sure to guide others on their journey through his achievements.
