Multi-generational living is not new for Pacific peoples; however, it is a more novel concept for New Zealand housing developments.

Recently, with support from the Ministry for Pacific Peoples’ Housing initiative, Auckland-based Penina Trust has opened five houses in Papakura, designed for multi-generational living, with edible gardens, areas for children to play and a fale.

Penina Trust Chief Executive Tupuola Roine Lealaiauloto says the Red Hill Road site is the first of its kind.

“We're not just about building homes, we want people to actually live, a place where children can play, a place where people can grow a few veggies, and just basically live,” Tupuola says.

This project is the product of a vision sparked 21 years ago, and the buildings are designed with Pacific lifestyles in mind, she adds.

The site is made up of two six-bedroom homes and three four-bedrooms, the design includes a bathtub to accommodate children and older residents, along with large kitchens and enough space for children to play on the deck.

Two of the homes cater for people with disabilities and include ramps and wide hallways.

Minister for Pacific Peoples’ Hon Dr Shane Reti was at the opening, and he says to see Red Hill come to life is exciting.

“It is a credit to the Penina Trust, and its innovative housing solutions which have evolved through the Ministry’s Pacific Building Affordable Homes fund,” Minister Reti says.

“It is reassuring to experience firsthand the great mahi Penina Trust is leading, in partnership with the Ministry, to provide secure housing for its communities.

“Both the Ministry and Penina Trust are committed to Pacific peoples and the goal of supporting home ownership, and the supply of affordable fit-for-purpose and healthier homes for our communities.”

Families can enquire about the site through the Penina Trust website, and referrals made through Work and Income.
